Channels

September 7 - October 20, 2018

Candela Gallery is pleased to present CHANNELS, a group exhibition featuring photographs and mixed media works by Courtney Johnson, Lisa Kokin, and Willie Anne Wright. The exhibition features three artists whose work evokes a transformative experience; each imbued with elements of salt, filament, or flora to create new forms.

WILLIE ANNE WRIGHT

Crediting Pamela Coleman Smith as a strong spiritual and artistic guide, Wright re-envisions the complete major arcana as a set of photograms. Long enamored with manifesting a supersensory undercurrent in her photographs, Wright’s lumen prints document the blooms from her beloved Brugmansia plant alongside Smith’s tarot cards. Channeling The Tarot conjures an aura not unlike an encapsulated spiritual transcendence.

COURTNEY JOHNSON

As in her Light Lure + Cycle of Cities series, Johnson continues to pull at the threads between modern technology and experimental, alternative photographic processes. Through a honed scientific process, Salt is the eponymous product of salted paper prints and salt water from various locations selected across a salinity continuum. Johnson guides the chemistry of the natural materials and their effects on each photograph.

LISA KOKIN

Sewn Found Photographs is a collection of photographic tapestries that stand as relics for a time that has long since passed. By literally stitching together vintage photographs of anonymous people, Kokin assembles nostalgic homages, interwoven with themes of identity, familial hierarchy, and social and societal rituals.
