PETER COCHRANE
Richmond-based photographer and printer Peter Cochrane's large, colorful landscapes command attention with a nearly psychedelic appearance. The painterly works are a result of Cochrane's several layers of technique: scanned film negatives are printed via risograph, then re-photographed digitally and made into archival prints.
The images in The Sensual World were made during a years-long series of therapy sessions to manage debilitating anxiety and panic attacks. Using analog photography with a commitment to navigating his fight-or-flight responses, Cochrane found new comfort and appreciation for his environment and the resulting negatives.
As I scanned the negatives, I found secrets in the images I didn’t know were there...In this translation from physical film to digital monitor—each using light and color in different ways to construct the same image—I felt some elusive yet crucial element was being chipped away...Working with a risograph printer for its unique color layering process, I watched the colors blend on the page to create an altogether new image—new information...I then digitally photographed the risograph to bring it back into the red, green, and blue realm of light to find new artifacts at a large scale.
This process uncovered the beauty, horror, stability, and degradation of the natural world that haunted me for years.
Peter will be in the gallery tomorrow, Thursday, November 17, at 6:30pm to talk more about his experience and processes behind The Sensual World. There will be light refreshments and copies of his risograph-printed book available for purchase.
