EXHIBITION
AND CURATION AT
CANDELA GALLERY

GENERAL SUBMISSION

Candela Books + Gallery works primarily with photographic artists, local to international, to put together eight to ten solo and group exhibitions throughout the year. Exhibitions typically last six to eight weeks, with our exhibition season ending in August.

While we usually have exhibitions booked out at least a year in advance, we welcome thoughtful proposals and portfolios for exhibitions or review via email.

UNBOUND!

Each February, we launch submissions for our annual juried + invitational group show, UnBound!, which has now run for ten seasons. Submissions are FREE. This is a great way to introduce your work to the gallery. We work with artists we've met through UnBound! in bigger ways throughout the year. Learn more about UnBound! here.

CURATION

Our small staff of three coordinates the concepts, artists, and administrative tasks behind the majority of the gallery’s exhibitions. Occasionally, the right project comes along and we host the curatorial talents of a local professor, artist or professional in the field. Because we are a small team, we can only take on curatorial projects with detailed proposals, confirmed artists, and realistic timelines. If you are interested in working with us for your curated photography show, please feel free to email a proposal and/or schedule a meeting.

Exhibition at Candela:
Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of art do you show at Candela?

We focus on photographic works. Our interpretation of the photographic medium is broad, and we’re happy to push the boundaries of what people understand photography to be. We have a particular love for varying interpretations of the photographic process, as well as photographic objects, which we always prefer over copies of original works. We will occasionally broaden the scope of medium to include artist’s related projects, which may not necessarily be photographic (ex: photographers who have a suite of illustrations which correlate with their main photographic project).

Conceptually, we find ourselves drawn to scientific, political, and narrative themes.

How do I show my photography at Candela?

We value making connections with our artists, collectors, and visitors, so reaching out in person or via email goes a long way. If you’d like to get your work in front of us, we always like to direct new friends to UnBound!, an annual invitational and juried group exhibition that goes on view every July and provides exhibition and collection opportunities for selected artists. The submission is free, so it is also competitive, with 500+ submissions in recent years, but the process also allows emerging artists to see all that goes into getting their work displayed and sold in a gallery setting. This is a great way to tell us more about yourself, your practice, and show us some of your portfolio. You’re also welcome to email us at info@candelabooks.com to introduce yourself and your work.

We love to support emerging artists as best we can, so we welcome inquiries. However, please note that we are a very small staff and are often focusing our energy on existing programming and serving those artists. If you want to reach out about potential exhibition opportunities outside of the UnBound! submission, it is helpful to present concise concepts and links to specific projects. Providing images of your works already created and presented in a gallery setting also allows us to visualize your work in our space. Including statements about the project, an artist bio, a CV, and an exhibition layout will all help your exhibition proposal feel more complete and allow us to understand wether we’re a good fit for your project.
