KENSUKE KOIKE

Presented on a shelf in the front gallery are a selection of altered postcards, ranging from different time periods and locations. Playing on a television beside the shelf are videos showcasing the process behind each piece (example shown above).

Kensuke Koike is a contemporary visual artist known for deconstructing vintage photographs and postcards. Koike makes thoughtful and precise alterations often without adding or subtracting material, creating a new identity for these objects with previous lives. The resulting interactive works have a sculptural presence, the skewed imagery creating a sense of discomfort, humor, and confusion in their viewers.

Koike, born in Japan and based in Venice, has been working with vintage photographs and postcards through paper craft techniques since 2012.

Koike has exhibited in the USA, UK, Japan, France, Italy, Spain, Ireland, Belgium, China, Switzerland, Germany, Portugal, the Netherlands, Pakistan, South Korea, Slovenia, Canada, Croatia

(de)constructed will be on view at Candela Gallery through February 19, 2022.
