At first glance, the soft, ghostly landscapes in the front gallery appear to be impressionist paintings. In reality, Corinne Vionnet’s works are created from thousands of photographs of famous world sites.

Mont St. Michel, 2007. Archival Pigment Print, 14.75 x 19.75 inches, Framed. Edition 2 of 6. $5450, Framed. INQUIRE >

Los Angeles, 2009. Archival Pigment Print, 35.4 x 47.25 inches, Framed. Edition 1 of 6. $13250, Framed. INQUIRE >

In her series Photo Opportunities and Scenic Views, the Swiss/French artist utilized keyword search to establish her source pool for each work, pulling images of famous monuments and landscapes from photo sharing websites. Each final work is comprised of over 100 sourced tourist photographs.

The resulting layered image, though soft, is still easily recognizable; a majority of the images have been taken from nearly the exact same angle.

The lack of variety in these layers references a level of performance that is associated with tourism activity. There can be a sense of obligation to document in a way that is familiar: what looks like my idea of this place? How will others recognize I have been here? Getting "the shot" becomes the event itself. This phenomenon has grown more prevalent with the normalization of cell phones, social media, and "influencer" culture.

New York (2), 2007. Archival Pigment Print, 14.75 x 19.75 inches, Framed. Edition 2 of 6. $5450. INQUIRE >

The two series are part of Vionnet's greater efforts to analyze the construction and maintenance of a collective social identity. Her work conveys the ambiguous lure of the Internet, which seemingly promises freedom and the discovery of new worlds; in reality, it imprisons us all in an algorithm, making us believe that we are unique. Her practice has turned to investigating perceptions of reality, the power of visual persuasion, and the transformation and building of emblematic figures.
