Subject to Change

The notion of objects having a soul is an old one and is perhaps a bit romantic.  But the intangible presence which objects possess is nearly inarguable.  Imperfections can signal appreciation or neglect, unusual provenance, or even historical import.  Just how does an artist respond to a given object – with emotion or with intellect or with intuition?  These ideas are what we hope to examine in this exhibition.

Subject to Change centers around seven artists who use traditional photographic processes to revive lost or discarded everyday objects. Each appropriated piece offers it’s own course in which to channel history, precipitating new stories through a range of alternative processes including wet plate collodion, silver gelatin prints, image transfers on film, collage, and 3-D mixed media objects.

The works on view bring together a wide range of personal effects that include lost possessions, family tokens, found objects, collected memorabilia, and rescued belongings; In this collection of contemporary works, each artist has modified and redefined interpretation, setting up new manifestations, each with a redefined impact, now waiting for the appreciation of a new audience. Exploring multiple familiar themes — of love, of loss, of relationships, of mystery – Subject to Change brings new interpretations to the familiar objects around us.
