Opening: Friday, May 7th, from 5pm - 8pm

Candela Gallery is thrilled to announce HANAFUDA SHOUZOKU, a solo exhibition by Japanese photographer, Shinya Masuda. The exhibition will open this Friday, May 7th, from 5 - 8pm and continue through June 18th.

As a former French chef turned photographer, Masuda's digitally constructed still-life works are sculpted from decaying subjects and combined with an attraction to eccentric color. Influenced by his Mother and Grandmother's appreciation for traditional Japanese textiles and paintings, each collage has a familiar relationship to materiality and everyday objects.

Masuda's work is built off of the Japanese card game Hanafuda. Each suite of images combines the decaying subjects to shapes and floral motifs reminiscent of the 12 suits honoring each month of the year and the fleeting passage of time.
