"Reimagining the American Roadtrip" by Isabelle Baldwin and Zoe Elefterin (2021-Ongoing) In 2021, amid the global pandemic, we set out on a journey to discover a sense of independence, driving the roads long photographed by men. 'Reimagining The American Roadtrip' offers an intimate portrayal of two women on the road, challenging the hyper-masculine perspective that dominates road trip photography and cinema. This project presents a story of female friendship, platonic love, and the complex line between girlhood and womanhood. Through a blend of intimate portraits, journal entries, polaroids, and sweeping landscapes, we initiate a dialogue on how women capture themselves and each other through photography. It is a celebration of the beauty and intricacy of female friendship. This project took shape when we were both navigating periods of artistic uncertainty and searching for a sense of home—a journey that ultimately led us to discover that feeling within ourselves, our shared Toyota Sienna, and along the open road.

BIO

Isabelle + Zoe / A Brief History,

Isabelle Baldwin and Zoe Elefterin met while attending Pratt Institute where they were deeply immersed in darkroom and studio practices and later received their BFAs in Photography in 2018. With a clear understanding of the foundation of one another’s work, Baldwin and Elefterin have been major proponents in supporting the evolution of each other’s individual artistic voices. Over their decade-long friendship, they have watched each other grow from students to professionals, and have been intimately involved with each other’s coming of age as artists.

In 2021, they started their project, ‘Reimagining the American Road Trip’, partnering with prestigious brands like Kodak Professional, Robert’s Camera, Hasselblad, and Moment. They have since continued documenting each other on various road trips across the United States, covering over two dozen states and national parks.
